Lithuania supports changes in Kosovo and increases number of soldiers in Afghanistan

On February 8-9 National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas participated in informal NATO Defence Ministers' meeting in Sevilla (Spain) where operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo, transformation of the Alliance, and relations with Partners were discussed. Minister J. Olekas declared Lithuania's support to the statement of the UN Special envoy for Kosovo M. Ahtisaari on the future of Kosovo province.

On February 8-9 National Defence Minister J.Olekas will participate in informal NATO defence ministers meeting in Sevilla (Spain). In the meeting the 26 attendant ministers plan to discuss NATO operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo as well as further military transformation of the Alliance. NATO peacekeepers have been deployed in Kosovo since 1999. There are approximately 16 thousand troops on service in the province. Afghanistan operation is the major NATO military operation also actively joined by Lithuania. Afghan Defence Minister is invited to take part in one of Sevilla working sessions too.

NATO-Russia Co-operation to be Discussed in Vilnius

On Wednesday, 28 February 2007, a high-level meeting of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) Working Group for Defence Reform and Co-operation will be held in Vilnius.
In the framework of the NRC, participants of the meeting will address the NRC Working Group for Defence Reform and Co-operation programme for 2007 and discuss issues covering NRC defence and military co-operation during the period 2008 to 2012.
The NRC work group will also conduct a seminar with the aim to exchange opinions on the enhancement of co-operation between Russia and NATO member states and address issues related to NATO military transformation and Russian military reform, as well as possibilities of NATO and Russia defence co-operation.
