Lithuania-sponsored project in Afghanistan begins

imgIn Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, a treaty on one of the projects, financed by Lithuania in the province of Ghor, was signed. The signing of the treaty allows to start the construction of small hydroelectric power stations. The treaty was signed by Gediminas Šerkšnys, the Lithuanian ambassador and the leader of the Special Mission from Lithuania participating in the Afghanistan Ghor Province Reconstruction Team, and Mohd Haidar Wahidi, the chairman of a non-state organization "Afghanaid".

The Minister of National Defence is to take part in NATO-Ukraine consultations in Sintra

The Minister of National Defence J.Olekas will participate in an Informal High-Level NATO-Ukraine Consultations in Sintra, Portugal, on October 5. The Defence Ministers intend to discuss the NATO-Ukraine cooperation in implementing Ukraine's defence and security sector reforms, the progress made, the priorities and guidelines of the cooperation; such points as Defence Policy in an epoch of wide range threats and non-conventional threats for Ukraine and the Alliance are also on the agenda.

Lithuanian troops to assist exhumation of WW II German soldiers

Lithuanian troops will assist the National Union for Care of German Soldiers' Graves (VOLKSBUND) and the Service for Care of Cultural Values in exhuming the bodies of German soldiers who died in World War II and were buried in Smalininkai and Lapgiriai in the district of Jurbarkas, Lithuania. The Defense Ministry has reported that the exhumation will take place on Oct. 4 to 13 and will have the involvement of military engineers, motorized infantry and military medics. The exhumation will be supervised by director of the exhumation group of the National Union for Care of German Soldiers' Graves Manfred Drobe.

The Mobile Force Commander visit Germany

imgThe Commanding Brigadier General of the Mobile Force of the Lithuanian Army Arvydas Pocius went on a trip to Germany to observe the Mounted Infantry Brigade of the Lithuanian Army ”Gelezinis Vilkas" (The Iron Wolf) soldiers perform in the multinational exercise ”Jagged Sword 2006".

The Minister of National Defence will take part in an informal EU Defence Ministers meeting in Lapland

The Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas will take part in an informal meeting of Defence Ministers of the European Union in Levi in Finland on the 2-3 of October. The main focus will be laid on the development of the EU military forces and the activity of the EU Defence Agency, also on the progress of the EU military operations and the cooperation of the civilians in crisis management. Points of international cooperation with such powers as the United Nations or NATO are also on the agenda of the EU Defence Ministers meeting.

Lithuania to hold the fifth international exercise Maple Arch

imgBetween 13–27 October an international peacekeeping exercise, entitled „Maple Arch” will be held at the Rukla Training Area in Lithuania. The exercise is expected to involve some 180 representatives from four nations: Canada, Lithuania, Poland and the Ukraine. A Canadian team of approximately 50 people will work with their Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian counterparts, train military personnel of these participating countries and assist them in improving procedures in relation to mission pre-deployment training. This will also help nations prepare designated units for potential future duty with NATO-led coalitions.
