Lithuanian Chief of Defence to visit military personnel serving on a mission in Kosovo

On 31 May –1 June Lithuanian Chief of Defence, Major General Valdas Tutkus and him accompanying delegation is due to depart for Kosovo, where they are to visit Lithuanian military personnel who are serving within the composition of the Polish-Ukrainian Battalion, POLUKRBAT, there. The Lithuanian Chief of Defence is scheduled to visit the Kosovo Force (KFOR) Headquarters where he is expected to meet with the KFOR Commander, Lieutenant General Giuseppe Valotto. Major General Valdas Tutkus is also scheduled to visit the POLUKRBAT White Eagle campsite, where he is due to meet with troops serving on the KFOR-14 rotation as well as with the POLUKRBAT Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Jerzy Mizgaila.

On 29 May the closing ceremony of the 38th World Military Modern Pentathlon Championship to be held at the Division General Stasys Rastikis NCO School.
On 29 May the outgoing Polish Defence Attaché to Lithuania Capt.(N) Czeslaw Karczewski to be awarded the National Defence System Medal For Merits at the Ministry of National Defence .

Lithuania to host the World Military Modern Pentathlon Championship

On 25-30 May the 38th Military World Modern Pentathlon Championship will be held in Kaunas, Lithuania. This is one of the events organised by the International Military Sports Council (CISM) on an annual basis. The primary organizers of the event in Lithuania are the Sports Club of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, the Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Forces and the Kaunas Municipality.
The 38th Military World Modern Pentathlon Championship involves over 100 athletes from a variety of countries: Austria, Belarus, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, South Korea, Ukraine and the US.

Rotation of the Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan

On Tuesday, 16 May the third rotation of the Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-3) launched an international mission in Afghanistan. An official ceremony of change of rotations of the PRT under command of Lithuania was held at the Ghor PRT campsite situated near the provincial centre of Chaghcharan. ”You have done a big job and now you can return home all being in proud of it," said Lieutenant General David J. Richards, Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), who also took part in the ceremony.

The following events are scheduled for 15-20 May in the Lithuanian National Defence System: On 15-16 May Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas to attend a formal meeting of EU Ministers of Defence and a meeting of the European Defence Agency Steering Council in Brussels, Belgium. On 17-19 May Undersecretary of the Ministry of National Defence Renatas Norkus to attend a NATO high level group meeting, which is scheduled to take place in Brussels, Belgium.

US Special Operations Commander visited Lithuania

On Tuesday, 9 May Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas met in Vilnius with the US Special Operations Commander General Bryan Brown. The meeting, which was also attended by the Lithuanian military leadership, focused on the participation of Lithuanian servicemen in international operations, security situation in Iraq and Afghanistan, issues covering readiness and activities of the Lithuanian Special Operations Force.
The US Special Operations Commander General Brown met with the command of the Lithuanian Special Operations Force and observed an integrated exercise of the Lithuanian Special Operations Force.

Minister of National Defence to pay an official visit to the Czech Republic

On Wednesday, 10 May the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas leaves for an official visit to the Czech Republic, where he is scheduled to meet with his counterpart Karel Kuhnl. The Ministers are expected to discuss bilateral co-operation, participation in international operations, NATO's air-policing mission in the Baltic States and NATO and EU defence policy and security related issues.

Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force and servicemen of the Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team left for Afghanistan

On Wednesday, 10 May, Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Brigadier General Arvydas Pocius and him accompanying delegation along with some 100 servicemen of the third rotation of the Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) left for Afghanistan, where they are to attend a ceremony of change of rotations of the international mission. As of Tuesday, 16 May, the third rotation of the Ghor PRT, given under the command of Colonel Vilmas Satas, will take over responsibility for the Lithuanian-led mission in Afghanistan. It is planned that servicemen from the previous rotation Ghor PRT-2 will return home in two groups by the end of May.

Lithuanian naval ship „Sūduvis” to attend a mine clearance operation MCOPLAT 06

On 5-18 May, the mine hunter and mine clearing ship, Sūduvis M52, of the Lithuanian naval force will be attending an international mine clearing operation MCOPLAT 06 to be held in the Baltic Sea, at the side of the coastline of Latvia. The operation will be conducted in Latvia's territorial waters and its exclusive economic zone. The exercise, which will be largest one in its scope in Latvia this year, will be attended by 13 ships representing Estonia, Germany, France, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden. During the exercise approaches of the Irben Strait are expected to be surveyed.

Ministry of National Defence to sign an agreement with the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces

On Thursday, 4 March the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence signed a co-operation agreement with the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces. The agreement in Geneva (Switzerland) was signed by Undersecretary of the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence, Mr Renatas Norkus and the Director of the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces, Mr Theodor H. Winkler.
