Lithuanian unit LITDET-5 presented with medal after performing mission in Iraq

imgOn Thursday, 2 February, at a welcome ceremony, which was held at the Alytus-based Lithuanian Grand Duchess Birute Motorised Infantry Battalion, Lithuanian Minster of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas and leadership of the Lithuanian Armed Forces thanked servicemen of the Lithuanian unit LITDET-5 (Lithuanian Detachment) for their excellent service in their six-month mission within the Polish contingent in the sector of Babylon Province near the city of Al Hillah in Iraq. During the ceremony, Minister Gediminas Kirkilas conferred the National Defence System's level decoration Medals for International Operations on some 50 soldiers of the LITDET –5 and the detachment's commander First Lieutenant Nerijus Rocevicius; the servicemen who served on the mission as not their first engagement abroad received badges. The Lithuanian Armed Forces' level Medal for Distinguished Service was conferred on Captain Giedrius Dvilatis, who served on the mission in the capacity of the contingent senior officer.

National Defence Minister to attend the 42nd Munich Security Conference

On Friday, 3 February Lithuanian National Defence Minister Gediminas Kirkilas leaves for Munich (Germany) to attend the 42nd Munich Conference on Security Policy, the primary topic of which will be Europe and the United States – Restoring of Transatlantic Relationship. The annual meeting of security and defence experts, which will take place between 3-5 February, is expected to be attended by over 40 ministers of defence of foreign affairs, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffe, Secretary General of the Council of the European Union Javier Solana, US Secreatry of Defence Ronald Rumsfeld.
