Lithuanian troops to take over aircraft movement control in Chahgcharan

imgOn Monday, 5 December troops from the Lithuania-led Afghanistan's Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team (Ghor PRT-2) took over aircraft movement control from the outgoing US servicemen at Chghcharan airport. At the Aircraft Movement Control Centre, seven US servicemen were replaced by three personnel serving with the Lithuanian Air Force: Captain Aleksiejus Bojevikas, 2nd Lieutenant Tomas Leontjevas and Technical Sergeant Eugenijus Ciparis. The Aircraft Movement Control Center has been charged with the task to ensure safe landing of aircraft transporting cargos to the PRT at the Chaghcharan airport; and when necessary, the airport could also be used by aircraft of other coalition partners. The Chaghcharan airport serves as the main gate of the PRT mission to the world.

Lithuanian Land Force Affirmation Exercise Phase II to be held in Rukla

The Lithuanian Land Force Affirmation Exercise Phase II will be conducted on 6-8 December 2005 at the Gaižiūnai Training Area and the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion (Rukla, Jonava distr.) Assessment of the preparedness level of the Lithuanian Land Force unit assigned to NATO -- Battalion Task Group -- is the second phase of the Lithuanian Land Force Affirmation Exercise. The first phase of the exercise was conducted in September earlier this year in Vilnius, which focused on the assessment of the preparedness of the Lithuanian Land Force Headquarters to operate in line with NATO procedures. The Headquarters' operational capabilities were assessed under the following criteria: peacetime readiness, preparation for international operations and redeployment of units, execution of operations and sustenance of units in the operation theatre. The second phase of the exercise will focus on the Battalion Task Group's readiness to involve in NATO-led operations.

On 5-10 December a basketball team of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to take place in the 42nd international SHAPE military basketball tournament in Monse, Belgium. On 5-6 December, Undersecretary of the Ministry of National Defence Renatas Norkus to attend a meeting of founders of the Center for Security Policy in Geneva, Switzerland.

Upon completing a mission in Afghanistan, the first rotation of the Ghor Provincial Reconstruction team is due to return home

On Saturday, 3 December, the first rotation of the Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team is due to return home upon completing the mission in Afghanistan. Approximately 110 Lithuanian troops left for the Ghor Provincial Reconstruction mission in Afghanistan in June 2005. The first unit of Lithuanian troops, led by Colonel Gintautas Zenkevicius, established the Ghor PRT campsite in the capital province of Chagcharan, set up relations with local authorities and launched the provincial reconstruction process; mobile communications and surveillance groups have undertaken patrolling in the region. The mission of the Ghor Provincial Reconstruction team is one of the largest Lithuanian international projects implemented abroad so far.

Decision concerning further participation of Lithuanian troops in the mission in Iraq within the composition of the Polish Battalion has not been made so far

imgA decision concerning further participation of Lithuanian troops in the mission in Iraq within the composition of the Polish Battalion has not been made so far. The decision in relation to the Lithuanian contingent serving within the composition of the Polish battalion will be made in consultations and co-ordination with allies, first of all with Poland, as well as with the US, Great Britain and Denmark. The decision is being considered over in a complex way, with the aim to find out, if and when the new leadership of the Polish Ministry of National Defence intends reducing the strength of its contingent deployed to Iraq, what changes are going to take place with regard to the nature of the mission.

Change of command ceremony is due to take place at the Dragoon Training Battalion

On Friday, 2 December a change command ceremony will take place at the Klaipeda-based Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Training Battalion. Major Zigmantas Jankauskas will replace the outgoing Commander of the Dragoon Training Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Petras Milasius who has commanded the unit since July 2003. Lt Col Milasius will continue his service at the Military Academy of Lithuania, where he will serve in the capacity of Chief of the Department of Tactics. The incoming commander Major Jankauskas completed his studies at the Bundeswehr Military Academy earlier this year. Before undertaking the studies in Germany, he served at the National Defence Service Force of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
