Lithuania and Denmark to agree on further co-operation in the field of defence

On Friday, 10 June, in Brussels, the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas and the Danish Minister of Defence Soren Gade signed a letter of intent on the attachment of the Lithuanian Armed Forces' Motorised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf to a division of the Danish Armed Forces. Based on the document, joint military training will be conducted, Lithuanian military officers will be provided with a possibility to take up their appointments at the division headquarters. Thus, the document will serve as a basis for accelerating the integration of the Lithuanian Armed Forces into NATO's military structures.

 

Denmark is Lithuania's most important partner in the field of defence among the Nordic European countries. Since 2004 a bilateral Lithuanian-Danish military project LITBRIG has been conducted in Lithuania. The main object of the project is by 2014 to train the staff of the Motorised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf and the brigade itself for all operations of NATO in line with NATO standards.

Lithuanian Air Force Navigation System to assist landing of military aircraft at Zokniai

imgAcquiring of TACAN navigation system is a significant step ahead in updating the Lithuanian Air Force base in Siauliai. Today both Lithuanian and other NATO countries' aircraft may perform flying operations in Lithuanian's airspace and land at the Siauliai military airfield twenty-hour hours a day and do it under any weather conditions, " Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force Colonel Jonas Marcinkus described the system.

Crews of Lithuanian and NATO countries' military aircraft have already made sure of reliability of the navigation system. A stationary tactical air navigation system TACAN which was put into operation at the Lithuanian Air Force (LAF) Base in Zokniai near Siauliai in north western Lithuania in May earlier this year serves to ensure secure approach and landing of military aircraft from the Alliance countries.

Live TV bridge "Lithuania-Iraq"

On Tuesday, 7 June Lithuanian commercial TV Channel TV3 will broadcast live TV bridge with Lithuanian troops deployed to Iraq. During the TV program Lithuanian viewers will be provided with a possibility to watch national representatives who are currently performing within the composition of Lithuanian Detachment LITDET-4 as part of the Multinational Division in Iraq.

The focus of the TV programme -- the live TV bridge with Iraq -- is an unprecedented event in Lithuania. A US digital video imagery distribution station, DVIDS, is deployed at the Polish-led multinational division headquarters. During the program, live interviews with Lithuanian military personnel on their service will be transmitted to Lithuanian viewers. Families of troops specially invited to attend the program at the TV studio in Vilnius will be able to ask questions and get answers immediately.

The TV bridge project is carried out by reporters of the program TV Forum in co-operation with the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania and a US military DVIDS team that has offered assistance in providing technical assistance to the project.

Lithuanian Naval Force frigate F-11

img On 6-18 June, the Lithuanian Naval Force combat ship Frigate F-11 Žemaitis will be attending the annual maritime exercise BALTOPS 05 in the Baltic Sea.

The exercise which will be conducted by the United States and Latvia for the thirty-third time so far will kick off in Latvia. The exercise will involve some 40 ships, 28 aircraft, 2 submarines and some 2,500 troops from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Sweden, the US, and the UK. Ships are scheduled to dock at the Latvian ports of Liepaja and Ventspils on 2 June and to take the sea towards Poland's territorial waters on 7 June.

This year's exercise is designed to improve the role of combined expeditionary forces in ensuring regional security. During the exercise the participating forces will improve their skills by conducting operations at sea including exercises in gunnery, replenishment at sea, undersea warfare, radar tracking, mine countermeasures, seamanship etc.

Leaving ceremony conducted to see off Lithuanian troops to Afghanistan

On Friday, 3 June, an official leaving ceremony of troops of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in the Afghan province of Ghor was conducted at the Ministry of National Defence.

During the ceremony, the leaving soldiers were congratulated by the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas, Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Major General Valdas Tutkus, leadership of the Ministry of National Defence, families of troops leaving for the mission. Commander of the Lithuania-led PRT, Lieutenant Colonel Gintautas Zenkevičius was handed in the unit's flag.

 

The mission in Afghanistan is one of the largest international projects to be implemented by Lithuania. With assistance from other NATO nations, Lithuania will lead the Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team, which is part of the operation of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.

Start to co-operation between Croatia and Lithuania in the field of defence given in Vilnius

On Friday, 3 June, in Vilnius, Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gedimninas Kirkilas and Croatian Minister of Defence Berislav Rončevič signed an agreement between the defence ministries of two countries concerning co-operation in the field of defence.

 

"The present document marks the beginning of bilateral co-operation between Lithuania and Croatia in the field of defence, " said Minister Gediminas Kirkilas.

 

At a meeting held prior to the signing of the agreement, the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence underlined Crotia's progress in its bids to join the EU and NATO. According to G. Kirkilas, Lithuania supports Croatia's aspirations and urges not to slow down the speed.

Croatian Minister of Defence to visit Lithuania for the first time

On Friday, 3 June Croatian Minister of Defence Berislav Rončevič will be with an official visit to Kroatijos gynybos ministrasLithuania for the first time. While in Vilnius, the Croatian Minister of Defence will meet with Lithuanian Minister of Defence Gediminas Kirkilas. During the meeting the Ministers are expected to discuss issues covering Croatia's integration to Euroatlantic structures, foreign engagements.

After the meeting the Ministers of Defence of Croatia and Lithuania will sign an agreement concerning co-operation between the two ministries in the field of defence.

Later in the day, B. Rončevič is scheduled to meet with Chairman of the Committee on National Security and Defence of the Republic of Lithuania, Alvydas Sadeckas, Under-secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dalius Čekuolis.

Lithuania is hosting the military exercise AMBER HOPE 2005

The multinational exercise AMBER HOPE 05 - the largest exercise in the Baltic States since their accession to NATO - will be held in Rukla, Jonava District, from 6 to 18 June 2005.

Around 2,200 military personnel and civilians from Azerbaijan, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States will participate in the exercise, which will be conducted in the Spirit of Partnership for Peace effort.

Foreign Defence Attaches accredited to Lithuania to meet for spring tour

On 25-27 May a spring tour of foreign Defence Attaches (DA) accredited to Lithuania is due to taking place in Klaipėda, Lithuania's seaport. The spring tour will bring together DAs from twenty nations.

On 26 May DAs will visit the Lithuanian Naval Force headquarters, where they are scheduled to meet with the Naval leadership. The visitors' will also familiarise with the Lithuanian Navy and the force development plans. They will also make tour of the Sea and Coastline Surveillance Service, Flotilla of Lithuanian warships. Later in the day, DAs are scheduled to visit the Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Training Battalion and the Kairiai Training Area.
