US experts assist Lithuania in reforming military planning 2004.06.10
![]() Since 2002 military experts from the US Cubic Applications Corporation have been rendering assistance to the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania. They have been providing proposals on how to effectively reform defence and military planning. The Corporation Vice-President and Head of Defence Subdivision Gerald Dinkel, who was with a visit to Vilnius, met on 9 June with Minister of National Defence Linas Linkevičius to discuss further co-operation. |

Belgian Armed Forces Commander to visit NATO forces deployed in Zokniai 2004.06.07
![]() On Tuesday, 8 June the Belgian Armed Forces Commander General August van Daele will be visiting Belgian, Danish and British troops serving with the NATO Quick Reaction Forces at their deployment location in Zokniai airfield in Lithuania's northern city of Siauliai.
Since the end of March the Quick Reaction Detachment of the Belgian Royal Armed Forces consisting of four F-16 aircraft fighters and 49 personnel have been deployed in Lithuania to guard the Baltic Statesā airspace. |

Lithuanian troops taking part in BALTOPS 04 exercise 2004.06.04
![]() On 7-19 June the Lithuanian Naval Force combat ship F11 Žemaitis, Lithuanian Air Force Mi-8 helicopter and twenty troops of the Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Service will take part in an annual maritime exercise Baltic Operations (BALTOPS) 2004 will take place afloat in the Baltic Sea in Poland and Germany. The BALTOPS 04 is designed to improve the role of combined expeditionary forces on regional stability, regional understanding and co-operation among the participating forces. During the exercise the participating forces will improve their skills by conducting a peace support operation at sea including exercises in gunnery, replenishment at sea, undersea warfare, radar tracking, mine countermeasures, seamanship, maritime interdiction operations and scenarios dealing with potential real world crisis. |

Baltic Defence Ministers to have a meeting 2004.06.02
![]() On Friday, 4 June, Lithuanian National Defence Minister Linas Linkevičius will take part in a meeting of Defence Ministers of the Baltic States, which will be held in Riga, Latvia. The Defence Ministers of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia will address participation of Baltic troops in international operations in the Balkans, Afghanistan and Iraq, military co-operation with the countries of South Caucasus, European Security and Defence Policy issues. |

Lithuania destructs last batch of anti-personnel landmines remnant of war 2004.06.01
![]() On Monday, 7 June the last batch of 340 anti-personnel landmines remnant of war in Lithuania will be destructed at the Central Training Area of the Lithuanian Armed Forces at Pabradė. In implementing its international commitments, Lithuania has become one of the first countries of the region of Northern and Eastern Europe to destroy explosives, the use of which has been prohibited in many countries of the world. in this region, anti-personnel land mines have been destructed in Norway so far. An official anti-personnel mine destruction ceremony will be attended by Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis, Vice-Minister of Lithuanian National Defence, Jonas Gečas, Vice-President of the International Red Cross Committee, Jacques Forster, President of the Council of Foundation of Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining, Cornelio Sommaruga, and representatives from other countries and organisations. The event will also be attended by Wolfgang Petritsch, Ambassador, President-Designate of the First Review Conference to be held on 1-3 December in Nairobi and Permanent Representative of Austria to the United Nations in Geneva. |

![]() On Monday, 31 May, Lithuanian National Defence Minister Linas Linkevičius met with the Polish Minister of Defence Jerzy Szmajdzinski, who is currently visiting Vilnius, and discussed military co-operation issues, exchanged their opinions on prospects with regard to NATO-EU relations in the are defence as well as NATO Istanbul Summit. The meeting was also attended by Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Major General Jonas Kronkaitis. |
