Chief of Defence of Lithuanian and US armed forces discussed cooperation possibilities in organising training for Afghan National Police in Ghowr

February 8, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Maj. Gen. Arvydas Pocius conducting formal visit in the United States of America met with Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff (Commander of US Armed Forces) Adm. Mike G. Mullen and other officers of Pentagon.

 

Major attention in the meeting will be paid to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) operation in Afghanistan. Maj. Gen. A. Pocius and Adm. M. G. Mullen discussed possible cooperation of armed forces of both countries while organising training for Afghan policemen in Ghowr where Lithuania is leading a PRT. Lithuanian CHOD also highlighted for US colleagues the opportunity to transit non-military supplies for ISAF.

During the meeting points of bilateral relations, support projects to Afghanistan and cooperation in international organisations were addressed. Minister R. Juknevičienė thanked interlocutor for active contribution of Japan in supporting Ghowr province of Afghanistan supervised by a Lithuania-led Provincial Reconstruction Team. High representative of Japan assured that Japan will continue providing support of the kind.

On February 7-11 Chief of Defence of Lithuania Maj. Gen. Arvydas Pocius will pay a work visit to USA where he and military authorities of the country will discuss NATO operation in Afghanistan, joint multinational training, US support to strengthening of Lithuania's defence capabilities, and other points of importance for both countries.

 

CHOD of Lithuania Maj. Gen. A. Pocius is planned to meet Chair of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike G. Mullen, US Assistant Secretary of Defence for International Security Affairs Alexander Vershbow, Adjutant General of the Pennsylvania National Guard Maj. Gen. Jessica Wright, and representatives of Lithuanian community.

Minister of National Defence stressed importance of NATO military exercises in the Baltic region in Istanbul

imgFebruary 4-5, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė took part in informal meeting of NATO Defence Ministers in Istanbul (Turkey). The meeting Ministers addressed the main topics: resources of the Alliance, transformation, NATO-led multinational operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo.

 

In the meeting Lithuanian Minister suggested arranging NATO Response Force training in Lithuania in the nearest future. R.Juknevičienė stressed that Lithuania will continue active participation in the process of NRF development. According to her, such training events enhance common security and interoperability of NATO forces. Lithuanian Minister upheld that NRF exercise, including the Baltic region, should become a frequent event.

Member of Lithuanian forces assisted in delivering humanitarian aid to Haiti

imgLoadmaster Sgt. Mindaugas Šalkauskas (Lithuanian Armed Forces) assisted providing humanitarian aid to earthquake devastated Haiti. On February 2 Sgt. M. Šalkauskas and crew of large military cargo plane „C-17 Globemaster III" delivered a load of assistance for disaster victims and for installing a camp for aid workers at the airport of Port-au-Prince.

 

Crew of flight was made of Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish, US, Lithuanian, and Romanian members serving in Papa Airbase (Hungary), permanent dislocation of military transport aircrafts - NATO's Heavy Airlift Wing. The crew flew under lead of HAW Commander Col. John Zazworsky (US Armed Forces).

Minister National Defence will take part in Munich Security Conference

imgFebruary 5-7, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė will attend annual Security Conference held in Munich (Germany).

 

R. Juknevičienė will attend the event in both roles - as top-ranking representative of a defence institution and acting Minister of Foreign Affairs.

 

The following topics will be mainly focused on in the 46th Munich Security Conference: the New NATO Security Strategy, missions and operations of NATO, arms control and disarmament, and issues of regional security.

Host nation support to countries conducting NATO Baltic Air-policing mission increased

imgFrom the beginning of 2010 the Baltic States are increasing host nation support for participants of NATO Baltic Air-policing mission for up to six flights of LAF transport aircraft C-27J „Spartan" to airlift troops on mission and loads. Expenses of additional flights „Spartan" will be paid in even parts by all the three Baltic States.

 

The first state to use the new opportunity was France currently in charge of NATO Baltic Air-policing mission. On February 2-3 transport aircraft C-27J „Spartan" of Lithuanian Air Force flew to and back from France changing shifts of personnel and load of the French Armed Forces

Minister of National Defence will attend informal meeting of NATO Defence Ministers

imgOn February 4-5 Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė will take part in an informal meeting of NATO Defence Minister held in Istanbul, Turkey.

 

In the meeting Ministers will address current issues of NATO resources, development of defence capabilities, revision of operational and response forces.

imgFebruary 2-3, envoy of the Ministry of National Defence will represent in NATO Logistics Conference in Brussels the possibility to conduct transit of logistic supplies to NATO's ISAF in Afghanistan.

 

According to the Lithuanian Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas, state institutions of Lithuania each in its scope are ready to provide all the necessary support for entities of Lithuania's economy interested in organising transit of NATO's non-military cargo for ISAF forces in Afghanistan via Lithuania's territory. However, Vice Minister V. Umbrasas stressed that the final success of transit agreements will depend on commercial conditions Lithuanian carriers will put forward for sending countries.

Chief of Defence of Lithuania visited multinational training of special operations forces

An international Joint Combined Exchange Training (JCET) for Special Operations Forces from Lithuania, the USA, and Latvia has been proceeding in Lithuania for three weeks now. Lithuania is represented in the exercise by two SOF squadrons „Aitvaras", one of them is undergoing training before mission in Afghanistan, the other one takes part in JCET together with special operations troops of Latvia and the United States.
